Inspiring Rewiring
Monday 9th May 2016
I recently listened to a radio interview with a gentleman called Daniel Kish. His story is so inspiring, and highlights the boundless possibility of the human mind.
Daniel describes how, having lost both of his eyes to retinal cancer as an infant, he was able to "recruit the visual cortex of his brain to enable him to see with a different sensory input".
He has effectively rewired the connections in his brain to harness a sensory power that we usually associate with bats and dolphins.
Daniel uses what he calls "flash sonar" to echo-locate objects, and build a visual image of his personal environment.
He now helps other visually impaired people to make these remarkable new neural connections for themselves, transforming their experiences of life.
I urge you to invest 13 minutes to watch Daniel's extraordinary Ted Talk of April 2015 "How I use sonar to navigate the world".
Then allow me to relate this to a (much more routine) personal experience...
I decided a couple of years ago to switch off my autopilot, and plan my career and my personal development much more actively. During this time, much of my drive to change direction and do things differently has come from a very personal experience of increased self awareness, and learning to rewire my brain.
I was taught this REWIRE skill by Dr Roy Whitten and Scott Roy, and its power to create change within me was a total revelation to me. My personal changes are on a far less impressive scale than that of Daniel Kish. But what I've learned along the way is that changes don't need to be huge to be transformational on a personal level - so long as the impact of the changes is something you deeply desire.
I've played around with this rewiring capability, creating new neural connections and had some good of successes with it both professionally and personally, to achieve goals that previously looked just a bit too hard: I lost weight and kept it off; I started running; I became more effective and empowered at work; and I unlocked my ambitions, which ultimately led to me creating Grey Sells Associates. I'm presently practicing rewiring my brain around being a better parent to my youngest daughter, with whom I clash more often than is good for her or me.
Funky stuff....but it really works.
If you're sufficiently intrigued, I encourage you to take one step further. Ask yourself what would you really like to change, if only you dared to believe that it was possible to do it? It could be personal or professional, but needs to be something that should be within in your control or you can at least strongly influence.
Its then time to direct you brain to work to build belief first, and then desire for change.
